Ricardo Bernardi, 1999 (1942-2025)

Dr. Bernardi’s outstanding clinical research work focused on psychoanalytic technique in Latin America, included the development of new research methodologies and well-designed protocols. He was a prolific author and collaborator, whose work dealt with important conceptual and clinical issues, such as the shifting nature of interpretation content given to patients over an extended number of years, which signaled the influence of different theoretical orientations in a psychoanalyst’s clinical work over a period of time. His work revealed the importance and essential nature of scientific research, particularly systematic observations, for the future of psychoanalysis.

Dr. Bernardi was a full professor at the Univeridad de la Republica, Uruguay and Head of the Department of Medical Psychology in the faculty of Medicine. He served on the committee that designed the national program for mental health in Uruguay. Active in the community, Bernardi was a member of the Psychoanalytic Association of Uruguay and the International Psychoanalytic Association.
