- [click here to read Dr. Etchegoyen's full comments, in Spanish]

Dr. Etchegoyan studied medicine at the National College of the Universidad Nacional de la Plata and began his psychoanalytic training in Argentina. Later he moved to England for further study, returning to Argentina in the 1970s. Despite his immersion in Kleinian theory while in England, Dr. Etchegoyan has an unusual capacity for sensitively appreciating other models, enabling him to explore ideas from different psychoanalytic approaches.

Dr. Etchegoyan’s broad psychoanalytic interests centered on the Theory of Technique. Through many years, this interest led to the construction of his monumental treatise The Fundamentals of Psychoanalytic Technique which was described by Robert Wallerstein (recipient of a 1991 Sigourney Award) as an impressively comprehensive effort to truly encompass the worldwide literature in this chosen area, that is, to compare and contrast at least the literature written in the four major psychoanalytic languages.

Sigourney Award recipient, Ricardo Bernardi, in his own acceptance remarks cited Dr. Etchegoyan’s “clarity and courage” in as an influence in his own work.

He was a founding member of the Buenos Aires Psychoanalytic Association and was the Latin American to be elected president of the International Psychoanalytic Association.. His professional background is vast. It includes a clinical practice of many years, innumerable supervisions, and an outstanding teaching career both within and outside the field of psychoanalysis.
