Rich Perspectives Advancing Psychoanalysis

In 2023, The Sigourney Award Trust received work from an exceptional pool of global applicants. The distinguished judges chose award-winning work infused with uncommon interdisciplinary approaches and distinct psychoanalytic perspectives seeking to mitigate human suffering based on sexual and gender identity, race, or religion, and oppression by authoritarian regimes. This year’s work reflects a synthesis of psychoanalysis and other disciplines weaving a richer tapestry from which psychoanalysis can continue to evolve.

The work submitted this year demonstrates so well that psychoanalysis is vibrant as it explores both traditional and innovative philosophies while incorporating complementary disciplines.

Mary’s Vision

Mary Sigourney created The Sigourney Award because she understood the significant contributions and lasting benefits of psychoanalysis, its ability to reduce human suffering, and its value in understanding human affairs.

Through the prize, Mary sought to reward efforts that were applied, as well as clinical or scholarly. Mary wanted to attract individuals across gender, race, culture, location, and professional categories to highlight how psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic principles intersect with academic, humanitarian, and arts-focused fields.

During the past five years, the Sigourney Trust has actively cultivated a more international applicant pool through expanded outreach to enhance the Trust’s ability to reach a wider, more diverse audience.

William A. Myerson, PhD, co-trustee (2011-2021) of The Sigourney Award reflects on the award’s advancement of psychoanalytic thought throughout the world.
